Caesarstone’s 5810 Black Tempal Anchors a Stunning Holiday Retreat in Whitstable
Set amidst the natural beauty of mature oak trees, the Whitstable Double Annexe project by bespoke furniture maker Herringbone House, is a remarkable transformation of 1960s stables into a pair of luxury holiday rentals. Designed in collaboration with Meridian Construction and architect Guy Holloway, the project seamlessly combines sustainable materials, high-end craftsmanship, and contemporary design to create a retreat that is as striking as it is functional. At the heart of this transformation is Caesarstone’s 5810 Black Tempal worktop, a surface that anchors the entire design concept with its bold aesthetic and practical benefits.
The brief for the project was to reimagine the existing stable structure into a space that would offer a unique guest experience while blending with the natural surroundings. Black Tempal was specified for the kitchen area, providing a dramatic yet versatile element that reflects the building’s black and silver charred timber façade. Its deep, textured tones contrast beautifully with the light birch ply interiors, setting the tone for an interior scheme that balances boldness with warmth.
Chosen for its exceptional durability, Black Tempal is an ideal solution for high-use spaces, offering surfaces that are resistant to stains, scratches, and heat. Extremely low maintenance, its properties ensure that the worktops remain as visually striking as the day they were installed, even under frequent use. The integration of Black Tempal throughout the space highlights the material’s ability to blend beauty and function, enhancing both the practicality and the overall aesthetic of the interiors.
In addition to its visual impact, Black Tempal plays a crucial role in connecting the interior and exterior design elements. The rich, natural texture of the surface echoes the charred timber cladding of the building’s exterior, creating a dialogue between the structure and its surroundings. This thoughtful cohesion is further amplified by the use of floating shelves and sleek, whitewashed cabinetry, which maintain the clean lines and contemporary feel of the design.
William Durrant, owner of Herringbone House, reflects on the success of the project, saying, "Hollaway, Meridian, and Herringbone delivered a high quality of design, craftsmanship, and finish that we are incredibly pleased with. The result is a space that feels as though it belongs to its surroundings while being playful, functional, and visually striking.”
