Situated just north of Winchester, this contemporary kitchen – designed by Hobson’s Choice in collaboration with bulthaup – has been thoughtfully created for a couple, their 12-year-old son, and their elderly dog. The family sought a space that would blend seamlessly with Niall McAleenan Architects’ design, while creating a restful atmosphere. A key focus was achieving a sleek yet functional design, using high-quality materials that would stand the test of time. As the heart of their home, the kitchen, topped with Caesarstone’s 4004 Raw Concrete worktop, serves as a daily gathering space where the family enjoys meals together and regularly entertain friends.
The kitchen design prioritises both aesthetics and usability, ensuring that the space adapts to the family’s routines. A pocket door unit was incorporated to discreetly house small appliances and create a dedicated breakfast station – an important element of their morning ritual. Thoughtful ergonomic features were essential, with elements such as recess grip rails and touch-opening drawers making the space more accessible. Given that a member of the family has some medical needs, this was a crucial element to the kitchen design. To enhance functionality, an electrically assisted fridge opening system was also installed.
At the core of the design is Caesarstone’s Raw Concrete, chosen for its ability to complement the muted tones of the bulthaup cabinetry and engineered wood flooring. Its refined, textured appearance lends a timeless sophistication to the space. The soft grey base, interspersed with textured flecks of blacks and whites, captures the classic urban aesthetic, adding depth and character to the space. While bulthaup kitchens typically feature 10mm worktops, a 20mm thickness was selected to support the breakfast bar overhang and achieve a stunning waterfall edge. The non-porous, stain-resistant, and heat-resistant qualities of Caesarstone make it the perfect choice for this high-traffic family kitchen, providing long-lasting beauty with minimal upkeep.
