Caesarstone’s 4044 Airy Concrete surface defines this sustainable family kitchen, combining durable elegance with low environmental impact.
Tucked into the Hampshire countryside, Dianthus is a high-performance home designed for a vibrant young family, with sustainability at its core. A spacious, multi-functional kitchen by Cornwall-based studio YEO sets the tone for the property, with Caesarstone’s 4044 Airy Concrete surface playing a defining role. Over four years in the making, the space is as thoughtful as it is beautiful, balancing environmental responsibility with durability, performance and everyday family life.
Designed to effortlessly adapt to real-life moments - from the everyday hustle and bustle to entertaining in the evenings - the kitchen needed to be practical, calming and built to last. Adam Hodgson, Director at YEO, explains: “This design wasn't just about the aesthetics, or a space to entertain. It needed to support the day-to-day life of our client, now and for the long term. The clients’ son has additional needs, so the materials needed to be natural, durable and easy to live with. Future-proofing meant designing a space that evolves with the family, not just visually, but in how it works too.”
At the centre of the room is a striking double-island configuration - a functional and social centrepiece around which family life flows. Connected by a run of cabinetry for additional storage, one island features a sink, the other a hob. Opposite, a full wall of integrated appliances and sleek cabinetry creates a clean, uninterrupted aesthetic. On the other side, expansive glass doors open fully to the garden, flooding the space with natural light and creating a seamless connection between indoors and out. A generous dining area sits adjacent, perfect for family meals or entertaining, while a home bar - complete with a wine fridge and concealed storage - adds a touch of indulgence.
Striking yet understated, the layout supports the dynamic rhythm of family life, accommodating everything from cooking and homework to lively hosting. Extensive mechanical and electrical systems are also discreetly housed within the kitchen, integrated so seamlessly they disappear into the architecture.
Key to the material palette is Caesarstone Airy Concrete, used to top both islands. A sophisticated, deeply textured surface, it brings a soft industrial edge to the space, with its light grey concrete-inspired base crossed by swirls of darker greys and whites. Launched in 2018, Airy Concrete has become a firm favourite among kitchen designers and homeowners alike for its unique interpretation of poured concrete and tonal variation.
As part of Caesarstone’s ongoing commitment to sustainable innovation, it is now available with ICON technology - the brand’s next-generation, crystalline silica-free formulation. Crafted using up to 80% recycled materials, including post-industrial glass, ICON delivers the same exceptional durability and design flexibility that Caesarstone is known for, while reducing environmental impact. “Airy Concrete gave us a neutral base that didn’t overpower the cabinetry but still had presence,” Adam shares. “It’s clean in every sense - visually, but also in terms of its low environmental impact. We didn’t look beyond Caesarstone. We knew what we needed – a clean, low-carbon option, and they had it. Simple as that.”
YEO has long specified Caesarstone surfaces for their consistency and service. Adam says: “We’ve worked with Caesarstone since the early days of YEO, which says a lot in itself. Working with Caesarstone is always straightforward. The service has always been solid, the product consistent, the range gives us plenty to work with and lead times are quick. It’s reliable, well-made, and easy to fabricate and work with on site. The larger slab sizes give us more freedom in the design, especially where natural stone might fall short. When you're delivering high-spec projects to tight timelines, having this kind of consistency makes a real difference.”
Alongside the Caesarstone work surfaces, the kitchen features Richlite cabinetry, Miele ovens, a Bora professional hob, Fisher & Paykel appliances, Tala lighting, and a Quooker tap - each selected to meet the clients’ brief for low-impact, high-performance design.
